Backround

At present, agriculture and fisheries in the Philippines are fighting for their existence. The main problem fishermen are facing is the decline in fish population, caused by destructive fishing-methods like dynamite- and cyanide-fishing, which are still being used today. That way, coral reefs are heavily damaged, and the fish population is not able to recover naturally. In addition, formerly rich fishing grounds are close to collapse because of drift net fishing and trawling.

In the agricultural sector, capacities of traditional ways of land use (e.g. shifting cultivation) are being pushed to their natural borders of utilization. An increase in population growth forces people to constantly exploit natural resources. Increasing soil erosion, soil nutrient deficiency and subsidence of water table are consequences derived out of slash-and-burn practices and illegal logging. The destruction of the natural resource base leads to an increase in poverty, which is strongly related to further destructive activities, a vicious cycle.
